Global Competence Fieldwork Intensive

The Global Competence Fieldwork Intensive is designed to give educators the opportunity to take part in an immersive experience abroad focused on global competence.)

Participants must commit to take part in all of the following components:

  • Dialoguing in Global Education course (Six sessions held Tuesdays 8-9:30 pm ET  Jan. 8 - Mar. 4, 2018. ). Culture, language, relationships, and interactions: these are essential in an interdisciplinary and interconnected world. The smaller the world grows, the more important living with/in different perspectives and among others becomes. This course uses a combination of queries from students and literature on identity, both individual and social, to offer students a framework to use in their fieldwork experience. Full course description is here. This course lasts for 8 weeks and participants should be prepared to devote approximately 10-12 hours per week to synchronous and asynchronous coursework.
  • Global Fieldwork course, an online course that is the hub for preparation and reflection activities before and after your trip. This course is less time-consuming than Dialoguing, and meets approximately four times between February & June. There may be some additional small group meetings. Participants will work together within country groups to prepare for, participate in, and reflect upon the fieldwork experience.
  • Fieldwork trip, during which the Global Competence Fieldwork group works with a community-based group or school in the host community to collaboratively address priority issues and projects identified by our hosts. Accommodations are generally in homestays. The trip will take place for 2-3 weeks in the summer 2018. Exact dates are TBD, but usually fall in July. The specific sites and dates will be finalized in January/February. Participants will have an opportunity to rank their site preferences, though in some cases they may be assigned to a site that was not their first choice. World Savvy partners with a number of organizations with longstanding relationships in host communities to offer the fieldwork trips, and in the past have offered sites in Latin America and Africa.
